SLA surface, up close

Every Alef implant has an SLA surface: Sand-blasted, Large-grit, Acid-etched. Zoom in from the implant to the electron microscope to see the texture that bone grows onto.

How the SLA surface is made

  1. Sand-blasted with large grit

The titanium implant is blasted with coarse grit particles. This creates the first level of roughness: craters and ridges tens of microns wide across the threads and the core.

  2. Acid-etched

The blasted surface is then etched in acid. Etching softens the sharp peaks left by blasting and adds a second, finer layer of micro-pits a few microns across, on top of the craters.

  3. Sealed until placement

Each implant is packed in a sealed tube and held in a titanium sleeve, so the treated surface is not handled before it reaches the osteotomy.

Two scales of roughness on one surface: the blasted craters give bone room to grow into, and the etched micro-pits give cells and proteins a texture to hold on to.

Why surface roughness matters

More contact area

A rough surface has far more area than a smooth, machined one of the same size, so there is more surface for bone to contact.

Cell attachment

Research on SLA surfaces shows that bone-forming cells attach and spread well on moderately rough titanium.

Holds the blood clot

The micro-pits retain the blood clot and proteins that start healing, which is the first step of osseointegration.

Mechanical interlock

As new bone grows into the craters and pits, it locks with the surface, which supports implant stability during healing.

Cortical drillThe last, widest drill goes only through the cortical layer, about the top third of the depth, not to full length. Alef implants are self-tapping, so the threads cut their own path in the bone below.

Product details & FAQ

The Alef implant is a tapered, self-tapping internal-hex dental implant with an SLA-treated surface, double-lead threads and a round apex. Its platform-switching, spiral design supports primary stability in a range of bone densities. It is available in five diameters (Ø3.5–6.0 mm) and lengths from 6 to 16 mm.

Key features

  • Tapered body with self-tapping, double-lead threads
  • SLA surface treatment
  • Platform switching with internal hex connection (Ø3.5 platform, hex 2.43 mm)
  • Recommended insertion torque: up to 60 Ncm

Sizes and references

Select diameter and length above. Each size has its own reference code (SKU), for example AL4210 = Ø4.2 × 10 mm.

Regulatory

MSDI products meet the highest standards set by the FDA, CE MDR, ISO 13485 and other regulatory bodies. Some products may not have regulatory clearance for sale in specific territories. See the instructions for use (IFU).
